Additional charges (Extra charges)

Services such as packing, appliance servicing, unpacking, or stair cases that are needed due to either your request or building regulations may result in additional charges. Any additional relocation services that you need should be mentioned to My Moving Quote via telephone.

Advanced charges

Charges for services performed by a third party at your request. The charges for these services are paid for by the movers and added to the charges on your Bill of Lading

Agent

A local moving company authorized to act on behalf of a larger, national company

Appliance -
The cost of a complete disconnect of an appliance at the originating residence and a reconnect of the appliance at the new residence. Covered appliances include washers, dryers, dishwashers, and refrigerators. Certain movers charge a surcharge for this service while others simply charge the amount of time the actual service takes. If a particular mover does not perform this service or contracts with a third party, the field is marked "NA"

Appliance Dolly

Supplied by self-service movers to help you load and unload large items like appliances and oversized furniture

Assessed Value Coverage

This specifies how much money per $1,000 of assessed value you will need to pay to cover your household items to their fully assessed value. Purchasing this protection requires that a cash value be assigned to the items you will be moving. If a deductible is applied, that value is stated next to the cost-per-$1,000 figure. For example, 7.50/100 means that the consumer must pay $7.50 per $1,000 of assessed value to cover the load against loss, and the first $100 of damage is not covered. Some valuation policies are calculated on a sliding scale, where the price per $1,000 of coverage will vary depending upon the total amount of coverage. In such cases, carriers are requested to quote valuation prices based on $25,000 of coverage. Please note that most valuation policies require that the entire load be covered, not just specific items. Ask your carrier for terms

Bill of Lading

This is the contract between the moving company and the customer. It also acts as a receipt. It is important to understand everything on the bill of lading before you sign it.

Binding/Non-Binding Estimate

Binding: The moving quotes are flat prices based upon a given inventory. No matter how long the job takes, the flat price is always paid. It is given only when an onsite estimate is performed
Non-Binding: These estimates are based upon the movers' previous experience of jobs similar to yours. As the name suggests, these estimates are subject to change
Hourly Rates: Customers are charged by the hour per man, per truck

Carrier

This is the mover with whom you're working

C.O.D. - Cash on delivery

This is when payment is required at the time of delivery. Make sure to ask if your payment should be in cash, credit or check

Cost of Move

This addresses how much the specific move will cost, not including the various extra charges and insurance or auto transport. All cost estimates are calculated based on information obtained from the listed Interstate Movers during a signup interview. Although every effort is made to gather the most accurate information, customers should be aware of the fact that many factors affect the cost of a move. Make sure to ask about all of the movers involved costs, including things like flights of stairs, distance between your residence and the moving van (some charge extra if your belongings are a significant distance from the moving van)

Divider

Many self-service movers will place commercial goods behind your household possessions on the trailer. A divider is installed between these separate shipments to keep them secure

Expedited Service

This is an agreement to transport goods by a set date in exchange for a higher rate

Flight of Stairs

This tells you the additional cost, if any, of a flight of stairs either at the point of origin or the destination. Please note that a third-floor walkup counts as two flights since you are starting on the first floor. Serviceable elevators (an elevator large enough to transport the household goods) eliminate the need to pay this fee

Freight-Service

A low-cost alternative to a full-service move, freight-service movers will move all of your household goods from your old address to your new address but will deliver the items only to the doorstep of your new home. Your items must all be boxed in advance, and your individual pieces of furniture will not be wrapped in blankets, as distinguished from full-service movers. Full Replacement Value Coverage

This specifies how much money per $1,000 of value, you will need to pay to protect your household items for their full replacement value. Full replacement value is the amount of money it will cost to purchase a new replacement for a damaged item, regardless of how old the damaged item was. If a deductible is applied, that value is stated next to the cost-per-$1,000 figure. For example, 7.50/100 means that the consumer must pay $7.50 per $1,000 of declared replacement value to cover the load against loss, and the first $100 of damage is not covered.

Full Service Mover

The most common form of moving company, the full service mover, will move all of your household goods from your old address to your new address. The items include moving boxes are picked up from every room in your old home and delivered to the appropriate rooms in your new home. Individual pieces of furniture are wrapped in blankets to protect them during shipment. Guaranteed Pickup and Delivery Service

A premium service whereby dates of service are guaranteed, with the mover providing reimbursement for delays. This type of service is often subject to minimum weight requirements

The detailed descriptive list of your household goods relocation services showing the quantity and condition of each item

Interstate Move

Any move that crosses a state boundary, regardless of the number of miles. Distinguished from a Local Move and Interstate Move

Intrastate Move

Any move which does not cross a state boundary, typically over 40 miles. Distinguished from Local Move and Interstate Move and requires nationwide moving companies.

Linehaul Charges

Basic method of billing for long distance service. Linehaul charges are calculated by mileage and the weight of your shipment. Linehaul charges may not include fees for charges such as the ones noted in Additional charges

Long Carry Charge

An additional charge incurred when articles must be carried an excessive distance to the movers truck

Standard Coverage

Movers, by law, are required to provide a minimum amount of free coverage. This number, typically 60 cents, refers to the amount of money you will receive per pound of damaged goods. This coverage is a bare minimum and should not be relied upon to cover you for any significant damage. For example, if you have a priceless vase which weighs two pounds, you would only be entitled to $1.20 of compensation if the vase is damaged in transit, for international move please visit our international movers page.

Storage-In-Transit

Temporary warehousing of your goods pending further transportation or transportation to your new home if it isn't ready for occupancy. You may not exceed a total of 180 days of storage, and you are responsible for the added SIT charges as well as the warehouse handling and final delivery charges

Valuation

Valuation is not insurance. Valuation offered by your relocation company is a tariff level of carrier liability based on the weight of your goods. Valuation covers your property by assessing value in three different ways explained above (Assessed Value Coverage, Full Replacement Value Coverage & Standard Coverage). In a nutshell, Valuation is an amount that reflects "what your goods are worth."
Valuation only covers your goods for damage or loss if you can prove negligence on the part of the relocation carrier. IT DOES NOT cover any loss or damage due to Acts of God, (high winds, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes) riots, strikes, civil commotion, etc. and all claims are settled by employees of the carrier that damaged your goods. The valuation charge compensates the mover for assuming a greater degree of liability than that provided for in the base transportation charges

Packing your boxes

Group items of similar size and weight. Try not to mix belongings from different rooms of your home. First, pour a layer of packing peanuts into the

bottom of the box. Wrap heaviest items first with bubble wrap or packing paper and place them in the bottom of the box. Wrap additional, lighter items with bubble wrap or packing paper and separate them from items in the bottom of the box with cushion foam. Place

heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top. Before closing your box, cushion the entire package using packing peanuts or crumpled packing paper stuffed firmly into unfilled spaces to

prevent shifting and damage to your goods.

Your filled box should not weigh more than about 30 pounds, or that which you can lift easily. Under packed boxes may collapse in transit, while over packed boxes can rupture, damaging belongings. Close the box and seal it with sturdy packing tape. Label the box with its contents and destination room.

Tier your load by placing the heaviest pieces in a
row across the floor of the van and building a second and third row on top of the first, and so on, until they reach the ceiling. Then start on the next tier. Household items are never identical in weight, shape or size, and packing for a tight, evenly distributed load is key to ensuring that all belongings arrive undamaged. The pros use pads to ensure that they meet this goal; to fill a space, to level a tier or to give support to a curved (contoured) or irregularly shaped item.
Use pads for the tops of cartons or blocks used underneath furniture with legs to help spread the weight evenly.
Fill the top of a hutch or armoire with pads to avoid springing the joints. Pads will raise the tier so that subsequent rows will not rest directly on the top lip.

Contrary to popular belief, the back of a TV needs just as much protection as the front; a good bump can cause major internal damage. To protect the back, roll two pads into “sausages” and place them vertically, one on either side of the horn between the back of the TV and the previous tier.
The tier behind the back of overstuffed furniture or upholstered couches must be padded to protect the furniture. Also, the floor under the couch must be padded and a pad folded into four gives plenty of protection to a couch with flat ends. However, a couch with irregularly shaped ends, such as one with “French wings”, must be set on a base of several pads folded to support the contour of the arm.

Follow these guidelines

Move on a weekday if you can, when banks, utilities and government offices are open.

Order preprinted address labels with your new address as soon as you know it. It makes the change-of-address process much easier.

Keep a utility log to check service-transfer dates. If you're moving locally, leave the power and water on at your old address a few extra days so you can go back and clean up after your move.

Choose a "packing room" ahead of time and box up a few things each day.

To save time, rent a carpet shampooer at the same time you rent your truck.

Mark each box with its contents and destination room. That way, you and your helpers will know where each box belongs at your new home.

If moving locally, you may want to leave your pets with a friend during moving day. Animals can become confused and frightened during a move.

Remember to allow for extra braking room when driving a moving Truck. Anticipate stops and allow a 3-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Moving and Kids You're readying for a move and you have a million things to take care of: closing the deal on your new house or apartment, anticipating your new job, and scheduling a pick-up, but it is important that you don't neglect your children. Take some time to discuss the upcoming events with them. Children take their cues from their parents, so make sure that you stay upbeat and positive throughout. Help them see the move as an exciting new beginning.
When is the best time to move? Unfortunately, there is no "best" time to move with your children. Unless you count moving only after you've discussed it with your children. Get their input about the timing of the move. Try to avoid making your word the law.
It'll be very hard for your teen if you decide to relocate during their senior year of high school, right before they graduate.
For your younger children, a move during the school year will allow them to immediately go from one social setting into another. They'll be receiving more attention from classmates and the teacher as the "new kid." On the other hand, a summer move may allow your children to become better acclimated with their surroundings. This way they won't be thrust into unfamiliar territory both at school and at home.
Your children may not like the reasons for the move, but with good communication, they'll understand them.
You may give them an inch, but make no mistake about it; they'll take a whole mile.
Teenagers have had more time to grow and develop an attachment with their social environment. Expect some moping and acting up early on and expect it to continue as long as a month after the move.
It'll be easy for you to become irritated and impatient but it is important that you deal with your child in the best manner possible. Granted, they may not want to talk to you right away but you should always let it be known that you're available at any time.
And they'll never be alone. How can they in the age of instant messaging and wireless phones? They'll be in constant contact with their friends. These friends, no matter how much you disapprove of their tattoos and piercings, only want the best for your child. They'll help your kids cope by constantly reassuring them and dishing out advice. Kids understand kids the best. True you were once their age, but that was many, many years ago...
You may balk at this hands-off approach, but chances are, you've raised your children right.
And here's the kicker: Teens are very resilient.
Parents just have to weather a few storms before the realization hits.
Children of different ages will react to the move differently. It is important that you are attentive to their needs and feelings. More so than with teens, you'll need to sit down and discuss the events of your move with younger children.
Toddlers will be old enough to sense changes in their environments. Since they spend most of their days with at least one parent, it's important not to neglect them. Otherwise, when they see the house in disarray and gradually getting emptier, they may worry about being left behind. Quickly allay their fears by keeping their favourite toys around and trying to keep as stable a household as you can during the planning and packing. As long as toddlers are comfortable and are close to their parents, they will not be affected by the move.
Let him pack and tote along some of his special possessions (do not discard any of them before the move, no matter how old and tattered they are).
Elementary school children have developed relationships with people outside of their homes. Leaving their friends will be difficult but the idea of moving to a different place can be exciting.
Since school is the primary place where children make friends, children in this age-range tend to have the easiest time making friends. They spend most of their time in school with the same classmates and the same teacher. Relationships develop naturally.
Children in this age-range should also be active participants in the move. Allow them to pack their own belongings. Teach them your new address and phone numbers right away. After the move, take the time to show them around their new neighbourhood.
